What happened?
The Central Cybercrime Bureau, together with the Podkarpackie Customs and Tax Office and the Police, carried out an efficient operation. Nine people suspected of creating and running the CoinPlex pyramid scheme were detained. Officers searched 21 locations, securing funds and assets worth almost PLN 1.5 million. Those detained were charged with participation in an organised criminal group, money laundering, fraud and breaches of banking law, including the unlawful collection of funds from individuals. The dismantling of the scheme is being overseen by the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Rzeszów. The Police are urging those who suffered losses to come forward to their nearest police unit.
How did the CoinPlex mechanism work?
The platform posed as an investment tool that used artificial intelligence to grow capital - all you had to do was "click a button" a few times a day. In reality, it was a classic pyramid scheme based on a Ponzi structure, paying returns to earlier investors out of funds from new participants. The illusion of professionalism was built through numerous adverts, incentives to recommend friends and the myth of a "guaranteed profit".
The extent of the losses and the scale of the problem
According to estimates, victims' losses may reach millions of zlotys, and tens of thousands of people across Poland may have fallen victim. The scheme collapsed after withdrawals were suspended and a huge influx of complaints from users who had lost access to their funds.
What does this mean for investors and businesses?
- Beware of promises of quick profits - if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
- No regulation = increased risk - platforms without a licence or KYC verification find it easier to exploit users' trust.
- Education is key - you should understand the basics of how financial mechanisms work and warn others about the risk of scams.
