The United Arab Emirates (UAE), led by Dubai, is not only a global metropolis and a technology hub of the future, but also one of the most tax-friendly places in which to do business. Thanks to dynamic growth, a stable economy and a transparent tax system, the UAE remains one of the most attractive destinations for investors and entrepreneurs seeking competitive fiscal conditions.
Why does the UAE attract entrepreneurs?
- No personal income tax
- An attractive corporate income tax (CIT) rate (9%) with numerous exemptions
- The ability to operate in free zones
- Legal stability and predictable regulation
- A strategic location linking the markets of Europe, Asia and Africa
Tax residency in the UAE - what you should know
Since March 2023, new, clearly defined criteria for obtaining tax residency have applied. An individual can become a tax resident in the UAE if they meet one of the following criteria:
- They spend at least 183 days in the UAE within a 12-month period
- They have their centre of personal and financial interests in the UAE
- They spend at least 90 days in the UAE and meet additional conditions (e.g. running a business)
The benefits? No obligation to file a personal income tax (PIT) return, full exemption from income tax and access to global investment markets.
Taxes for individuals
The UAE does not impose income tax on individuals - regardless of the source of income. This means that income from employment, investments or property rental is free from taxation. This is precisely why the UAE attracts freelancers, investors, people running online businesses and highly qualified professionals from all over the world.
Corporate taxation - 9% CIT, but...
From 1 June 2023, the UAE has applied corporate income tax (CIT) at a rate of 9% on income above AED 375,000. Income below this amount remains exempt from CIT. Importantly:
- Companies in free zones may benefit from exemptions if they meet specific conditions
- The CIT rules also include regulations on transfer pricing and economic substance
- Certain sectors are excluded (including the extractive sector, foundations and government organisations)
CIT exemptions
The UAE CIT system provides numerous reliefs and exemptions, including for:
- Dividends paid between related entities (that meet the conditions)
- Income of foreign permanent establishments (PE)
- Profits from international transport activities
- Family foundations and investment funds
As a result, entrepreneurs can run their businesses on transparent terms and enjoy effective tax optimisation.
